Course: Grade 11 World Religions
Date: Spring 2021 – In-Person Learning
Teacher: Phil Hosmar
After studying the five major religions of the world, students are challenged to compare their faith journey and experiences with those other religions. They articulate what they believe, what experiences they have had, or are looking forward to, their sacred stories and history, and what influences their
living from day-to-day. Students use the knowledge gained through the course to put together a final artifact of their choosing and share a section or two with classmates.
Each student has the opportunity to talk about their artifact and it is amazing the maturity in belief and conviction many students articulate. Students hear from each other and discover shared experiences, wonderings, doubts and foundations. It is a safe space to talk about our questions and look through Scripture to find that Jesus offers what a lot of other religions cannot. The goal of the assignment, and the course, is to build understanding of others’ faiths and cultures and to realize the beauty God has placed in all of his creation. A goal is that students come away from the course with a deeper knowledge and appreciation for other world faiths and a deeper commitment to Jesus and his gifts of grace and salvation.

I liked the course because we compare it (our faith) to different religions and we learn how we can live peacefully with other religions and how we can share the gospel to them as well in our similarities.

I think it’s a really good reflective course that a lot of students should take just for the sake of their own understanding and reflection. It’s not too hard of a course and it was a fun time and it just…helps you grow in your own faith as well.
