In grade 9 French we have completed two units of study. The first reviewed the French learned in elementary school as a way to ease students back into the study of a foreign language. The second was entitled “Je me Présente” and students learned how to give information about themselves in French including such things as: numbers and descriptions of family members, individual likes and dislikes, self-descriptions, and how to give contact information to new acquaintances. The unit concluded with students creating a video in which they met someone for the first time and had a conversation introducing themselves. Students are getting used to being in a “French” environment where they are expected to speak French during classroom activities. We have been to the computer lab several times where students practice their French using an online program called Xpresslab. As the semester continues, students will begin working towards their culminating purpose-based activity where our class will visit the grade 1 students of St. Jean de Brébeuf, a French-only school located near London Christian High. The grade 1 students will be interviewed by the high school students, who in turn will create a story-book of that student’s life. It will be a challenging, but rewarding experience!
