Mobile Classroom Arrives Safely in Tanzania

After several months of various challenges, the Mobile Classroom has successfully arrived in Tanzania! This project, which began in January 2019, involved a group of nine senior students in the Design Block (D-Block) class designing and constructing a new computer classroom for Amani Primary School, located  in the Tanga region of Tanzania. Partnering with Hope Story – an organization serving orphans and vulnerable children – the D-Block students developed a plan to support Amani in their need for updated technology.

Under the direction of D-Block teacher Matt Rock, the class retrofitted a 40’ steel shipping container with windows and doors, equipped with built-in desks and seating, and wired for the lighting, computers, and air conditioning. Each student was responsible for a core element of the project – welding, design, IT, electrical, lighting, flooring, security, insulation, furniture making – and also led the research, design and implementation for their assigned area, developing expertise and leadership along the way.

While the scale of this student-led project was immense, Mr. Rock and his students were grateful for the support of the London Christian High community and many local business in providing funds, supplies and volunteer hours to successfully complete the classroom. The design and construction were completed in June 2019, and the shipping container finally arrived in Tanga this past August.
