Computer technology permeates our daily lives, both at home and at work and school is no exception. At LCH, we provide students with a variety of ways to access information and develop their own ideas using technology. In addition to multiple computer spaces, students have access to a multitude of databases in which to conduct research and search for information. Upon enrolment, students receive a LCH user account which can be used on any computer in the school building, prior to their first LCH user account use, students and their parents must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy. The LCH user account includes a school email address, access to Google Apps, and student access to Edsby.
Wifi Access
Limited wifi access is provided for students and guests to the school. We enforce content filtering for all Internet use at the school. Students are expected to engage with internet content that is consistent with the mission and vision of LCH, is glorifying to God, honouring to themselves and other people. Viewing or interacting with offensive or inappropriate content is viewed as in opposition to the character guidelines established by the school and may result in suspension.
Phones
While there is the potential for phones to be helpful in the learning process, these devices can also be distracting and detrimental to both the user and the rest of the class when used improperly. Responsible use of phones is important for our students to learn and practice and takes maturity and self-control. Students assume all responsibility for the security of their own devices and are expected to secure them during break times. We are not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of any personal equipment brought to school.
Teachers may require all students to keep their phones out of sight or may ask students (individually or as a whole class) to put their devices in a designated place (ie. drawer or “basket”). Students are expected to respect the teacher’s request promptly and without complaint. Students may choose not to bring phones to class at all.
Any use of phones in class must be done “in the open” and with the teacher’s permission. All personal uses of electronic devices (ie. calling home, texting friends, etc.) must be done outside of class time. If there is an emergency, students must make arrangements with their teacher.
Repeated disregard for these and the teacher’s expectations or if a student is unwilling to respect a request made by a teacher, the student will be referred to the Vice Principal. The VP may choose to remove the device for the day or indefinitely. The VP will be in touch with parents in the event of repeated issues.
NOTE:
It is expected that video, audio recordings or photographs will not be taken without the knowledge and consent of the teacher and every person involved. Use of cameras and recording devices in washrooms or change rooms is strictly prohibited.
Filtering and Personally-owned Devices
Internet access through the LCH network is filtered according to a number of categories that we have deemed inappropriate or distracting to student learning. The system we use will effectively filter most of the websites that fall in these categories but cannot “catch” everything.
Many students, however, have their own personally-owned devices with their own data plans. LCH cannot filter nor log the Internet access of these devices when users access a cellular network.
